Here are the next few questions, along with my discussion of the answers. As before, I&#39;ve obscured the answers by putting them in white text on a white background; just highlight the area between the brackets to see what&#39;s there, and click on smaller images to embiggen them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>7.&#0160; Slivovitz, \u021auic\u0103, eau-de-vie de Quetsche, and Mirabelle brandies are made from what fruit?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>[<span style=\"color: #ffffff; background-color: #ffffff;\">PLUMS<\/span>]<\/p>\n<p>Fruit&#0160;<em>eaux-de-vie<\/em>&#0160;are a big part of the brandy universe, though grape brandies tend to get most of the attention. Central and Eastern Europe are especially known for their fruit brandies (though Oregon\u2019s&#0160;<a class=\"postlink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clearcreekdistillery.com\/products\/clear-brandies\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Clear Creek brandies<\/a> are extraordinary &#8211; covered <a href=\"\/2010\/05\/28\/pdx-the-d-evidently-stands-for-drinking-part-2-clear-creek-distillery\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> several years ago), and other giants of the form include <a class=\"postlink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/foods\/poire-williams-brandy-with-whole-pear\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Poire Williams<\/a>&#0160;and&#0160;<a class=\"postlink\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kirsch\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kirchwasser<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If you recognized the varietal names of&#0160;<a class=\"postlink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.regions-of-france.com\/regions\/lorraine\/food-gastronomy\/mirabelle-plum\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mirabelle<\/a>&#0160;or&#0160;<a class=\"postlink\" href=\"https:\/\/latimesblogs.latimes.com\/dailydish\/2007\/09\/in-one-of-the-w.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Quetsche<\/a> [<span style=\"color: #ffffff; background-color: #ffffff;\">plums<\/span>], this was an easy in, and <a class=\"postlink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.seriouseats.com\/what-is-slivovitz-best-brands-plum-brandy-marska-navip-rudolf-jelinek\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">slivovitz<\/a>&#0160;can be amazingly good.&#0160;<a class=\"postlink\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%C8%9Auic%C4%83\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u021auic\u0103<\/a> is [<span style=\"background-color: #ffffff; color: #ffffff;\">plum<\/span>] brandy from Romania, and I still want to taste that sometime.<\/p>\n<p><strong>8.&#0160; What brand of Cognac does Jay-Z partially own, together with Bacard\u00ed? He reps it enthusiastically, drinking it out of a Grammy in 2013, and mentioning it in several tracks: (Note: NSFW lyrics)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"asset  asset-audio at-xid-6a00d8345190b469e2026bdefeebe6200c img-responsive\"><a class=\"inline-player\" href=\"https:\/\/cdn.savemyblog.com\/e69e0f69-b5ee-40a3-ae18-2eacedf93a8d\/www.cocktailians.com\/files\/brandy_8_371025.mp3\">Jay-Z Cognac montage<\/a><\/p>\n<p>[<span style=\"background-color: #ffffff; color: #ffffff;\">D\u2019USS\u00c9<\/span>]<\/p>\n<p>I wanted to include a question that touched on&#0160;<a class=\"postlink\" href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/human-interest\/2013\/12\/cognac-in-african-american-culture-the-long-history-of-black-consumption-of-the-french-spirit.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cognac&#39;s popularity among the African-American community<\/a>&#0160;and&#0160;<a class=\"postlink\" href=\"https:\/\/vinepair.com\/articles\/hennessys-popularity-is-not-due-to-hip-hop-the-story-is-much-deeper-than-that\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">specifically<\/a>&#0160;within&#0160;<a class=\"postlink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.worldsbestbars.com\/how-american-rap-and-cognac-became-partners-in-crime\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hip-hop culture<\/a>, and there are certainly a ton of&#0160;<a class=\"postlink\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.cognac-expert.com\/6-best-rap-songs-with-hennessy-lyrics\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hennessy<\/a>&#0160;(and to some extent&#0160;<a class=\"postlink\" href=\"https:\/\/genius.com\/8963609\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">R\u00e9my Martin<\/a>&#0160;and&#0160;<a class=\"postlink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/templates\/story\/story.php?storyId=98943891\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Courvoisier<\/a>) mentions that seemed fairly obvious. I thought&#0160;<a class=\"postlink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/BL-SEB-73771\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jay-Z\u2019s partial ownership of <span style=\"background-color: #ffffff; color: #ffffff;\">D\u2019uss\u00e9<\/span><\/a>&#0160;(produced by Otard, a subsidiary of Bacard\u00ed), provided an interesting in, and he certainly has embraced the brand;&#0160;<a class=\"postlink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.esquire.com\/food-drink\/drinks\/a19256\/jay-z-drinking-booze-out-of-grammy-cup\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">here he is drinking it out of a Grammy<\/a>&#0160;as mentioned in the question.<\/p>\n<p>The montage was fun to put together and consists of, in order, excerpts from Hova\u2019s \u201c<a class=\"postlink\" href=\"https:\/\/genius.com\/8059739\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Part II (On the Run)<\/a>\u201d, his verse on Justin Timberlake\u2019s \u201c<a class=\"postlink\" href=\"https:\/\/genius.com\/1409530\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Suit &amp; Tie<\/a>\u201d, his \u201c<a class=\"postlink\" href=\"https:\/\/genius.com\/1937246\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">F.U.T.W.<\/a>\u201d, his verse on Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s \u201c<a class=\"postlink\" href=\"https:\/\/genius.com\/2548050\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Drunk In Love<\/a>\u201d, and his verse on Rick Ross\u2019s \u201c<a class=\"postlink\" href=\"https:\/\/genius.com\/2572719\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Devil Is a Lie<\/a>.\u201d I tried to find lyrics that would lead you to \u201c<span style=\"background-color: #ffffff; color: #ffffff;\">D\u2019uss\u00e9<\/span>\u201d with the rhymes, assonance, or wordplay. (<a class=\"postlink\" href=\"https:\/\/globalgrind.com\/3967723\/every-time-jay-z-friends-rapped-about-dusse-this-past-year-list\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Here<\/a>&#0160;are just a few more mentions.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>9.&#0160; The Sidecar, a perfect marriage of Cognac, Cointreau, and lemon juice, is arguably the most famous brandy cocktail. An ancestor of the Sidecar, though, has been called \u201cthe absolute pinnacle of the nineteenth-century bartender\u2019s art.\u201d It\u2019s kind of halfway between an Old-Fashioned and a Sidecar, and is possibly named for its glass\u2019s sugared rim; what word has been redacted from the following recipe?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"[Image shows an illustration of a cocktail in a small glass with a sugared rim and a lemon peel inside. Then smile.]\" \/><\/p>\n<p>[<span style=\"color: #ffffff; background-color: #ffffff;\">CRUSTA<\/span>]<\/p>\n<p>The&#0160;<a class=\"postlink\" href=\"https:\/\/punchdrink.com\/articles\/what-the-hell-is-crusta-cocktail-recipe\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brandy <span style=\"color: #ffffff; background-color: #ffffff;\">Crusta<\/span><\/a>&#0160;is a great drink that really lets the Cognac shine, but also accents it with the Cointreau and just a splash of lemon juice.&#0160;<a class=\"postlink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.esquire.com\/food-drink\/drinks\/recipes\/a3823\/brandy-crusta-drink-recipe\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The drink is from 1840<\/a>&#0160;and Joseph Santini, manager of the City Exchange bar in New Orleans. The picture and recipe cited here are from&#0160;<a class=\"postlink\" href=\"https:\/\/euvs-vintage-cocktail-books.cld.bz\/1862-The-bar-tenders-guide-1862-2-50\/52\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the 1862 edition of&#0160;<em>The Bar-Tender\u2019s Guide: How to Mix Drinks or The Bon Vivant\u2019s Companion<\/em><\/a> by Jerry Thomas, the first bartending book published in America. The [<span style=\"color: #ffffff; background-color: #ffffff;\">Crusta<\/span>] rates one of only a handful of illustrations in the entire book, no doubt because of its striking presentation with the full lemon peel and the sugared rim.<\/p>\n<p>The quote dubbing it &quot;the absolute pinnacle of the nineteenth-century bartender&#39;s art&quot; comes from&#0160;<a class=\"postlink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.esquire.com\/food-drink\/drinks\/recipes\/a3823\/brandy-crusta-drink-recipe\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">this great piece<\/a>&#0160;by drinks historian David Wondrich,&#0160;<em>the<\/em>&#0160;authority on pre-Prohibition drinks (and a good deal more besides), and it&#39;s worth reading in full. (And you can go&#0160;<a class=\"postlink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Yvr4uaQDnhY\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> to watch Dr. Wondrich prepare a Brandy [<span style=\"color: #ffffff; background-color: #ffffff;\">Crusta<\/span>], in a video from Google Play when they released <a class=\"postlink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/books\/edition\/How_to_Mix_Drinks_Or_A_Bon_vivant_s_Comp\/YixiPjSSEtoC?hl=en&amp;gbpv=0\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">an enhanced edition of Thomas&#39;s book<\/a>&#0160;with added commentary.)<\/p>\n<p>Later on, the Sidecar would evolve &#8211; it\u2019s something like&#0160;<a class=\"postlink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.225batonrouge.com\/food-drink\/make-daisy-cocktail-classic-sour-cocktail-family\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a daisy, a sour with a liqueur added<\/a>, but also something like the&#0160;<a class=\"postlink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/books\/edition\/How_to_Mix_Drinks_Or_A_Bon_vivant_s_Comp\/YixiPjSSEtoC?hl=en&amp;gbpv=1&amp;pg=PA108&amp;printsec=frontcover\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fancy Brandy Cocktail<\/a>, which was essentially an Old-Fashioned cocktail made with brandy, but in a fancier glass and with a piece of lemon peel added. The Sidecar increases the amount of lemon juice, and possibly borrows its sugared rim from the [<span style=\"background-color: #ffffff; color: #ffffff;\">Crusta<\/span>].<\/p>\n<p>But let me encourage you to try a&#0160;<a class=\"postlink\" href=\"https:\/\/cold-glass.com\/2015\/01\/31\/an-old-fashioned-the-hard-way-the-brandy-crusta\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brandy <span style=\"color: #ffffff; background-color: #ffffff;\">Crusta<\/span><\/a>&#0160;if you haven\u2019t had one, as they really are wonderful.
