Part 4"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As seen here <a href=\"\/2020\/01\/14\/rum-trivia-part-1\/\">earlier<\/a>, I recently put together a trivia quiz all about rum. Here are the last few questions, along with my discussion of the answers. As before, I&#39;ve obscured the answers by putting them in white text on a white background; just highlight the area between the brackets to see what&#39;s there.<\/p>\n<p><strong>10.&#0160;&#0160;&#0160; I\u2019m gently muddling a large sprig of mint with three-quarters of an ounce of simple syrup. I squeeze three-quarters of an ounce of lime juice into the glass, and add the spent lime hull and two ounces of white rum. I shake it, strain it into an ice-filled glass, and add two ounces of carbonated water. What drink have I made you?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>[<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Mojito<\/span>]<\/p>\n<p>[<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Mojitos<\/span>] <a class=\"postlink\" href=\"https:\/\/punchdrink.com\/articles\/can-the-mojitos-reputation-be-saved-and-classic-mojito-recipe\/\">don\u2019t always have the best reputation<\/a>&#0160;among bartenders, but that\u2019s a&#0160;<a class=\"postlink\" href=\"https:\/\/drinksanddrinking.com\/2014\/04\/29\/the-best-mojito-in-the-world\/\">shame<\/a>, as a&#0160;<a class=\"postlink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jeffreymorgenthaler.com\/the-dos-and-donts-of-mojitos\/\">properly<\/a>&#0160;<a class=\"postlink\" href=\"https:\/\/punchdrink.com\/articles\/ultimate-best-mojito-cocktail-recipe\/\">made<\/a> [<a class=\"postlink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jeffreymorgenthaler.com\/mojito\/\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Mojito<\/span>]<\/a>&#0160;is an incredibly refreshing, wonderful drink on a hot day. (Even if&#0160;<a class=\"postlink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eater.com\/drinks\/2015\/12\/9\/9880450\/hemingway-mojito-havana-myth\">Hemingway didn\u2019t really drink them<\/a>!)<\/p>\n<p><strong>11.&#0160;&#0160;&#0160; Rum can come from all over the world and not just the Caribbean basin. Name the two countries that the rums Stroh and Bundaberg originate from.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>[<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Austria (Stroh), Australia (Bundaberg)<\/span>]<\/p>\n<p>This question originally asked you to name the countries of origin of Barbancourt (Haiti) and Zacapa (Guatemala) as well as&#0160;<a class=\"postlink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.stroh.at\/en\/history.html\">Stroh<\/a>&#0160;and&#0160;<a class=\"postlink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bundabergrum.com.au\/distillery\/chapter\/01\">Bundaberg<\/a>, but playtesters wisely advised me to cut this down to a smaller answer set.<\/p>\n<p><strong>12.&#0160;&#0160;&#0160; Perhaps the best-known item of liquor-brand swag is the distinctive red cap that is given away (never sold) by what Barbadian rum brand, to sailors in the regattas that they sponsor?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"asset-img-link\" href=\"https:\/\/cocktailians.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/01\/6a00d8345190b469e20240a4b43533200c-1.jpg\" style=\"display: inline;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Red hats redacted (1)\" border=\"0\" class=\"asset  asset-image at-xid-6a00d8345190b469e20240a4b43533200c img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/cocktailians.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/01\/6a00d8345190b469e20240a4b43533200c-800wi-1.jpg\" title=\"Red hats redacted (1)\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>[<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Mount Gay<\/span>]<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not really a sailor, but lots of&#0160;<a class=\"postlink\" href=\"https:\/\/rushtri0055.wordpress.com\/2014\/01\/24\/mount-gay-rum-regatta-hats\/\">sailors<\/a>&#0160;are&#0160;<a class=\"postlink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baltimoresun.com\/news\/bs-xpm-1995-11-30-1995334015-story.html\">really into<\/a>&#0160;the&#0160;<a class=\"postlink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nshof.org\/sailing-an-american-experience\/film-library\/lifestyle?id=445\">mystique<\/a> and supposed cool of the [<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><a class=\"postlink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sailingscuttlebutt.com\/2016\/04\/08\/how-mt-gay-rum-became-an-international-brand\/\" style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Mount Gay<\/a><\/span>] regatta hats. I was hoping that \u201cBarbadian rum brand\u201d would lead everyone straight to [<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Mount Gay<\/span>], as it\u2019s by far the biggest brand from there.<\/p>\n<p>The quiz originally included a couple more questions; as one tester pointed out, two questions were more about rum as a theme rather than as a topic, so they were the easiest to decide to cut. Here they are:<\/p>\n<p>When comedian Morey Amsterdam visited Trinidad in 1943, he heard a calypso by Lord Invader that lamented US GIs debauching local women. Amsterdam brought it back to the US, removed most of its social commentary, and turned it into a chart-topping hit in 1945 by what familial singing group?&#0160;&#0160;<\/p>\n<p class=\"asset  asset-audio at-xid-6a00d8345190b469e20240a4dd66d8200d img-responsive\"><a class=\"inline-player\" href=\"https:\/\/cdn.savemyblog.com\/e69e0f69-b5ee-40a3-ae18-2eacedf93a8d\/www.cocktailians.com\/files\/rum-coca-cola.mp3\">Rum And Coca-Cola<\/a><\/p>\n<p>[<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">The Andrews Sisters<\/span>]<\/p>\n<p>This song spurred some interesting copyright&#0160;<a class=\"postlink\" href=\"https:\/\/theamericanscholar.org\/rum-and-coca-cola\/#.Xh4znRdKjUJ\">history<\/a>&#0160;of its own; check out the cases of&#0160;<em><a class=\"postlink\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.law.gwu.edu\/mcir\/case\/baron-v-leo-feist\/\">Baron v. Leo Feist, Inc.<\/a><\/em>&#0160;as well as&#0160;<a class=\"postlink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rumandcocacolareader.com\/calypsoontrial.html\">The Rum and Coca-Cola Reader<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Elmore Leonard\u2019s 1992 crime novel&#0160;<em>Rum Punch<\/em>&#0160;was adapted into what film released five years later?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>[<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Jackie Brown<\/span>]<\/p>\n<p>Quentin Tarantino changed the&#0160;<a class=\"postlink\" href=\"http:\/\/elmoreleonard.com\/index.php?\/novels\/rum_punch\/\">novel<\/a>\u2019s setting from South Florida to Los Angeles and changed the main character\u2019s name from Jackie Burke to [<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Jackie Brown<\/span>], echoing Pam Grier\u2019s 1974 title role in <em>Foxy Brown<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>So that was the quiz. As I mentioned in my recap, there&#39;s a world of great information on rum out there, including from&#0160;<a class=\"postlink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eater.com\/drinks\/2015\/6\/23\/8833359\/a-comprehensive-beginners-guide-to-rum\">Eater<\/a>, The&#0160;<a class=\"postlink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ministryofrum.com\/rum101.php\">Ministry<\/a>&#0160;of&#0160;<a class=\"postlink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ministryofrum.com\/articles.php\">Rum<\/a>,&#0160;<a class=\"postlink\" href=\"https:\/\/flaviar.com\/blog\/rum-types-explained\">Flaviar<\/a>, and&#0160;<a class=\"postlink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalfloss.com\/article\/81137\/history-rum-4-drinks\">other<\/a>&#0160;<a class=\"postlink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/wine\/spirits\/article\/Rum-makers-distill-unsavory-history-into-fresh-2707149.php\">sources<\/a>. I relied heavily on the work of&#0160;<a class=\"postlink\" href=\"http:\/\/wayne-curtis.squarespace.com\/\">Wayne Curtis<\/a>, many of whose articles I\u2019ve linked to above and whose book&#0160;<em><a class=\"postlink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.indiebound.org\/book\/9780525575023?aff=Cocktailians\">And a Bottle of Rum: A History of the New World in 10 Cocktails<\/a><\/em>&#0160;was invaluable.
