{"id":510,"date":"2019-10-03T21:16:12","date_gmt":"2019-10-03T21:16:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cocktailians.com\/2019\/10\/higher-tariffs-coming-on-european-wine-whiskeys-cheeses-and-olives.html"},"modified":"2019-10-03T21:16:12","modified_gmt":"2019-10-03T21:16:12","slug":"higher-tariffs-coming-on-european-wine-whiskeys-cheeses-and-olives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cocktailians.com\/?p=510","title":{"rendered":"Higher tariffs coming on European wine, whiskeys, cheeses, and olives"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"editable hscroll js-media-gallery fr-view\">\n<div>\n<p>I see, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/10\/02\/business\/airbus-wto-us-tariffs\/index.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">in a CNN article<\/a>, that the US plans to impose tariffs on $7.5 billion worth of European exports, after a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wto.org\/english\/news_e\/news19_e\/316arb_e.htm\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">WTO decision<\/a> allowing the US to retaliate against European subsidies for Airbus.<\/p>\n<p>One of the alarming notes for tipplers like us is that among <a href=\"https:\/\/ustr.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/enforcement\/301Investigations\/EU_Large_Civil_Aircraft_Final_Product_List.pdf\">the categories of imports specifically targeted by the US Trade Representative&#39;s office for higher tariffs<\/a> are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/10\/03\/business\/trump-tariffs.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">several European food and drink items<\/a>. Each of these categories is getting a 25% increase in import duties:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Single malt or straight Scotch and Irish whiskies from the UK <small>(so, Northern Irish whiskies e.g. Bushmills, not ones from the Republic of Ireland like Jameson, and almost every Scotch. I&#39;m not sure if this includes blended Scotch whiskies like Dewar&#39;s or Johnnie Walker)<\/small>;<\/li>\n<li>Liqueurs and cordials from Germany, Ireland, Spain, or the UK <small>(e.g., Bailey&#39;s, Jagermeister, Goldwasser, Drambuie, Fernet-Branca, Campari, Disaronno, Galliano, limoncelli, Aperol, Licor 43, et al)<\/small>;<\/li>\n<li>Wine from France, Germany, Spain, or the UK;<\/li>\n<li>Fresh cheese from Germany, Spain, or the UK;<\/li>\n<li>Other cheeses from several countries including Germany, Italy, Spain, and the UK <small>(e.g. Cheddar, Parmesan, provolone, Romano, Stilton, gorgonzola)<\/small>;<\/li>\n<li>Olives and olive oil from France, Germany, Spain, or the UK;<\/li>\n<li>Pork products including ham, sausages, and pork shoulders from Austria, Germany, Spain, Italy, the UK, or several other countries <small>(e.g. Speck, prosciutto, Serrano)<\/small>;<\/li>\n<li>Butter, cheeses, and yogurt from several countries including Ireland <small>(e.g. Kerrygold)<\/small>;<\/li>\n<li>Cherries from Italy, Slovenia, or several other countries <small>(e.g. Luxardo cocktail cherries)<\/small>;<\/li>\n<li>Sweet biscuits, cookies, or wafers from Germany or the UK.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Interestingly enough, French cheeses don&#39;t seem to come in for additional tariffs, and of course because Switzerland isn&#39;t part of the EU, Swiss cheeses aren&#39;t affected either. (Swiss-style cheeses from other countries may be more expensive, however.)<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"EF5s-52WoAASi0G\" class=\"asset  asset-image at-xid-6a00d8345190b469e20240a48c1cd7200c img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/cocktailians.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/01\/6a00d8345190b469e20240a48c1cd7200c-320wi.jpg\" style=\"margin: 0px 5px 5px 0px;\" title=\"EF5s-52WoAASi0G\" \/>The European Union has been levying 25% tariffs on US whiskey, which has caused American whiskey exports to the EU to decline 21% since the tariffs were imposed in June 2018, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.distilledspirits.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Impact-of-Retaliatory-Tariffs-on-U.S.-Spirits-Exports.pdf\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">according to the Distilled Spirits Council<\/a>. The group is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.distilledspirits.org\/news\/u-s-alcohol-trade-groups-call-for-end-to-tariffs-on-eu-spirits-and-wine\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">denouncing<\/a> the US retaliatory tariffs, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.distilledspirits.org\/news\/u-s-retaliatory-tariffs-could-cost-up-to-78600-jobs-in-u-s-beverage-alcohol-hospitality-sectors\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">arguing that they could cost up to 78,600 US jobs in the hospitality and beverage alcohol industries<\/a>.
