Not just because they&#39;re friends of the blog, but: non-alcoholic gin from a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cookingissues.com\/2010\/08\/11\/infusion-profusion-game-changing-fast-%E2%80%98n-cheap-technique\/\" target=\"_self\">nitrous infuser<\/a>! Mixed with beet juice! And another drink with pineapple-infused tequila and long pepper syrup! Neat-sounding stuff. You can vote till 11:30p PDT <small>(no, not <a href=\"http:\/\/pdtnyc.com\/\" target=\"_self\"><em>that<\/em> PDT<\/a>)<\/small> tonight. So DO EET.<\/li>\n<li>And it ain&#39;t cocktails &#8212; so <em>technically<\/em>&#0160;outside the purview of this here site &#8212; but <a href=\"http:\/\/pachangapatterson.com\/about.html\" target=\"_self\">Pachanga Patterson<\/a>, a restaurant just around the corner from Cocktailians HQ, <a href=\"http:\/\/weheartastoria.com\/2012\/09\/are-you-a-homebrewer\/\" target=\"_self\">is hosting an interesting-looking homebrewing contest<\/a>. If you brew the winning beer, you get $500. Not bad!<\/li>\n<li>Speaking of voting, and drinking, Cocktailians is a nonpartisan blog. But we may be supporting the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.makersmark.com\/#cocktail-party\" target=\"_self\">Cocktail Party<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>Homebrewing&#39;s great, but I&#39;d rather think about home distilling. Chuck Cowdery points out that the pipedream of the <a href=\"http:\/\/chuckcowdery.blogspot.com\/2012\/09\/the-backyard-distillery-it-can-be-done.html\">backyard distillery is achievable<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>Here&#39;s a nice <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/life\/food-and-wine\/food-trends\/cocktails-take-an-acid-trip\/article4506436\/\" target=\"_self\">roundup of shrubs and vinegars in cocktails<\/a>, from the <em>Globe &amp; Mail<\/em>;<\/li>\n<li>There&#39;s the famous <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nycaviation.com\/2009\/12\/on-this-day-in-aviation-history-december-11th\/#.UFJk2I2PUTY\" target=\"_self\">Lufthansa heist<\/a>, of course, but I think the &quot;Operation Last Call&quot; bust yesterday of 18 workers at JFK airport, who <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2012\/09\/12\/us\/new-york-airport-thefts\/index.html\" target=\"_self\">allegedly boosted over 100,000 leftover liquor minis from American Airlines<\/a>, is destined to go down in cocktailian lore;<\/li>\n<li>So apparently <a href=\"http:\/\/newyork.grubstreet.com\/2012\/09\/flatiron-room-opening-new-york.html?mid=partnerfeed\" target=\"_self\">some joint called the Flatiron Room<\/a> is opening up. Um. Do they not know about, or are they hoping to capitalize on confusing arising from the name of, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flatironlounge.com\/index_main.html\" target=\"_self\">Flatiron Lounge<\/a>, a spectacularly good bar that&#39;s been open for almost a decade, six blocks away?! And who do these jokers think they are, anyway? WTF?<\/li>\n<li>Robert Simonson <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/09\/12\/dining\/japanese-whiskeys-gain-ground-in-america.html\" target=\"_self\">looks at Japanese whiskies in the <em>NYT<\/em><\/a>. (I hadn&#39;t discovered them till Tales 2011, but was impressed with what I found. The superb staff is one of them.)<\/li>\n<li>Speaking of Pegu, I see that <a href=\"http:\/\/mlkshk.com\/r\/JC81\" target=\"_self\">Kenta Goto will be guest-bartending next week<\/a> at Ma Peche;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/08\/30\/us\/kentuckians-fed-up-with-a-fungus-sue-whiskey-makers.html?_r=2&amp;pagewanted=1&amp;hpw\" target=\"_self\">Interesting <em>NYT<\/em> story on folks in Kentucky who don&#39;t like the ethanol-loving black fungus<\/a> that lives near distilleries, so they&#39;re suing major distilleries Brown-Forman, Heaven Hill, Diageo, Buffalo Trace, and Jim Beam. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/magazine\/2011\/05\/ff_angelsshare\/\" target=\"_self\" title=\"Good Wired story on the fungus&#39;s taxonomy and [re-]discovery.\">stuff&#39;s been around forever<\/a>, and <em>Baudoinia compniacensis<\/em> was first described in the 1870s. (Even the scientific name shows off its origins: &quot;compniacensis&quot; means &quot;from Cognac.&quot;) I noticed it all over the sides of warehouses when I visited the Kentucky Bourbon Trail a few years ago, and <a href=\"http:\/\/chuckcowdery.blogspot.com\/2012\/06\/frivolous-fungus-suit-endangers.html\" target=\"_self\">Chuck Cowdery notes<\/a>: &quot;The fungus is well known and generally regarded as harmless, if a bit of a nuisance. It can be removed with a little soap and water. Typically, all a distillery neighbor has to do is ask and the distillery will send a cleaning crew at no charge.&#0160;It is extremely doubtful that any complainant bought their house before the accused distillery was built.&quot; Cowdery also <a href=\"http:\/\/chuckcowdery.blogspot.com\/2012\/08\/fun-with-fungus-maybe-not.html\" target=\"_self\">points out<\/a> that the stuff is pretty similar to common mildew, and decries the NIMBYism of people not wanting to live near distilleries;<\/li>\n<li>Gothamist said <a href=\"http:\/\/gothamist.com\/2012\/08\/31\/rum.php\" target=\"_self\">it&#39;s time for rum to make a comeback<\/a>.
