{"id":618,"date":"2010-11-25T22:14:01","date_gmt":"2010-11-25T22:14:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cocktailians.com\/2010\/11\/drinky-linky-thanksgiving-edition.html"},"modified":"2010-11-25T22:14:01","modified_gmt":"2010-11-25T22:14:01","slug":"drinky-linky-thanksgiving-edition-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cocktailians.com\/?p=618","title":{"rendered":"Drinky Linky: Thanksgiving Edition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Happy Thanksgiving from all the Cocktailians to you.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#39;t have a particular Thanksgiving cocktail to share with you, but I will probably be making <a href=\"\/2008\/12\/15\/mxmo-submission-tippecanoe-sparkler\/\" target=\"_self\" title=\"Tippecanoe Sparkler, as seen here previously.\">Tippecanoe Sparklers<\/a> tonight after the day job releases me.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/vidiot\/5207676096\/\" title=\"Great Lakes Pumpkin Spirit by Vidiot, on Flickr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Great Lakes Pumpkin Spirit\" height=\"500\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5126\/5207676096_e9f5f6777e.jpg\" width=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And, recently I was the lucky recipient of a gift of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greatlakesdistillery.com\/pumpkin.htm\" target=\"_self\">Pumpkin Spirit<\/a> from the Great Lakes Distillery in Milwaukee. (Well, the gift was from my friend <a href=\"http:\/\/www.czelticgirl.com\/\" target=\"_self\">Anne<\/a> &#8212; thanks! &#8212; and the spirit was from the distillery.) The stuff isn&#39;t quite what I&#39;d expected, as the pumpkin nose is immediately apparent on opening the bottle, but the flavor isn&#39;t as readily noticeable, and exists more as a light aftertaste. The spirit isn&#39;t sweet at all, and it tastes like a whisky, with its attendant burn. But it&#39;s a burn redolent of pumpkins and spice. I can attest that it makes an excellent Old-Fashioned, particularly with Fee&#39;s Whisky Barrel-Aged Aromatic Bitters.<\/p>\n<p>What&#39;s going on with you? Here&#39;s some stuff that&#39;s caught our eye lately:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do you <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlanticwire.com\/opinions\/view\/opinion\/Happy-Hour-Vid-Martha-Stewart-Plies-Turkeys-with-Booze-Before-Killing-Them-5762\" target=\"_self\" title=\"Martha Stewart does.\">get your turkey drunk<\/a> before slaughtering it?<\/li>\n<li>Or do you <a href=\"http:\/\/gothamist.com\/2010\/11\/22\/vodka-infused_turkey_your_solution.php\" target=\"_self\">infuse it with various horrible-sounding flavored vodkas<\/a> before you cook it?<\/li>\n<li>The Chicago <em>Tribune<\/em> covers what they term &quot;<a href=\"http:\/\/leisureblogs.chicagotribune.com\/thestew\/2010\/11\/the-most-unnecessary-bottle-of-vodka-in-the-world-now-available-for-the-holiday-season.html\" target=\"_self\">the most unnecessary bottle of vodka<\/a> in the world&quot;, which is really saying something;<\/li>\n<li>CNN.com&#39;s <a href=\"http:\/\/eatocracy.cnn.com\/2010\/10\/13\/55-mixologist-dale-degroff\/\" target=\"_self\">Eatocracy spoke with Dale DeGroff;<\/a><\/li>\n<li>This is interesting. Has anyone ordered <a href=\"http:\/\/shop.ebay.com\/johndavidkeys\/m.html?_nkw=&amp;_armrs=1&amp;_from=&amp;_ipg=25\" target=\"_self\">these &quot;bitters pack&quot; recipes and ingredients from this guy <\/a>on eBay? I&#39;m very curious about these bitters kits;<\/li>\n<li>Frank Bruni&#39;s excellent &quot;Tipsy Diaries&quot; column in the <em>Times<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/11\/12\/dining\/12tipsy.html\" target=\"_self\">covers coffee cocktails<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>&#8230;and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/11\/26\/dining\/26tipsy.html?ref=frank_bruni\" target=\"_self\">bars with art<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>&#8230;and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/10\/29\/dining\/29tipsy.html?ref=frank_bruni\" target=\"_self\">the Frisco Cocktail<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>The <em>Times<\/em>&#39; tasting panel also tackles <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/11\/17\/dining\/17pour.html?_r=3&amp;hpw\" target=\"_self\">hard cider<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>Is rum &#8212; which definitely seems to be an increasingly-trendy spirit &#8212; really &quot;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/food\/archive\/2010\/11\/the-bore-behind-the-bar-can-rum-join-its-hipster-friends\/66466\/\" target=\"_self\">the bore behind the bar<\/a>?&quot;;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jeffreymorgenthaler.com\/\" target=\"_self\">Jeffrey Morgenthaler<\/a> of Clyde Common (my review <a href=\"\/2010\/05\/28\/pdx-the-d-evidently-stands-for-drinking\/\" target=\"_self\">here<\/a>) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=MppuzOSw850\" target=\"_self\">concocts an original holiday cocktail<\/a> for downtown Portland;<\/li>\n<li>Camper English has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alcademics.com\/2010\/11\/the-orange-in-pyrat-rym.html\" target=\"_self\">possibly solved the mystery of Pyrat rum&#39;s strong oranginess<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/magazine\/archive\/2010\/11\/gunpowder-on-the-rocks\/8251\/\" target=\"_self\">how &quot;proof&quot; works, and how gunpowder is involved<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>and last but far from least, a celebration of David Wondrich&#39;s new book <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0399536167?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=telescreenorg-20&amp;linkCode=xm2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creativeASIN=0399536167\" target=\"_self\"><em>Punch: The Delights (and Dangers) of the Flowing Bowl<\/em><\/a>. I&#39;m in the middle of reading it, and it&#39;s excellent and as much of a <em>tour de force<\/em> as his prior book <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0399532870?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=telescreenorg-20&amp;linkCode=xm2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creativeASIN=0399532870\" target=\"_self\"><em>Imbibe!<\/em><\/a>. I&#39;ll post a full review when I&#39;m done, but here are interesting reviews and stories about it <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424052702303467004575574722181795234.html\" target=\"_self\">in the <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/10\/15\/dining\/15tipsy.html?_r=2&amp;ref=dining\" target=\"_self\">the <em>Times<\/em><\/a>, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/features\/food\/sc-food-1119-drink-wondrich-20101119,0,1147435.story\" target=\"_self\">Chicago <em>Tribune<\/em><\/a>. I would also be remiss if I did not note that you can purchase bartending-themed shirts from his concern <a href=\"http:\/\/www.drunkistan.com\/\" target=\"_self\">Drunkistan<\/a>, and also mention that he has founded the <a href=\"http:\/\/northgowanus.wordpress.com\/\" target=\"_self\">North Gowanus Institute for Cranial Distempers<\/a>. (I assume the Institute is rather more devoted to the creation than the alleviation of said distempers.
