I can&#39;t help it &#8212; there are too many interesting stories out there.&#0160; <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Did you know <a href=\"http:\/\/wiki.webtender.com\/wiki\/David_Wondrich\">David Wondrich<\/a> has <a href=\"http:\/\/thefastertimes.com\/drinking\/\">a new-ish column at The Faster Times<\/a>? He&#39;s got three installments up so far: a meditation on &quot;<a href=\"http:\/\/thefastertimes.com\/drinking\/2009\/07\/06\/annals-of-the-bar-on-the-dignity-of-herding-drunks\/\">the dignity of herding drunks<\/a>&quot;, <a href=\"http:\/\/thefastertimes.com\/drinking\/2009\/07\/09\/new-orleans-the-fizz-in-all-its-toothsome-glory-stands-ready-to-be-sipped\/\">the most complete history of the Ramos Gin Fizz<\/a> I&#39;ve ever seen, and <a href=\"http:\/\/thefastertimes.com\/drinking\/2009\/07\/24\/annals-of-the-bar-anything-more-to-drink-genltemen\/\">a truly remarkable post<\/a> on the sheer variety of drinks available at a New York hotel in 1916. He&#39;s also finding lots more great cocktailian links, so be sure to swing by;<\/li>\n<li>The New York <em>Daily News<\/em> digs up the &quot;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/lifestyle\/food\/2009\/07\/27\/2009-07-27_cocktails_of_the_city_five_proud_bartenders_dish_on_the_drinks_that_define_their.html?page=0\">drinks that define the five boroughs<\/a>.&quot; However, I have some quibbles with this one: the drink that defines Manhattan isn&#39;t&#8230;a Manhattan? (That said, I don&#39;t have any objections whatsoever to a good Old-Fashioned, and the Emancipation sounds okay.) And no <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/richpub\/syltguides\/fullview\/J2G2UEMLC2TU\">Bronx<\/a> for the Bronx? I offer no comment on the Jager Bomb&#39;s suitability for Staten Island (memo to self: invent a drink called the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fresh_Kills_Landfill\">Fresh Kills<\/a>), but at least they chose a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.barrypopik.com\/index.php\/new_york_city\/entry\/brooklyn_cocktail\/\">Brooklyn<\/a> for Brooklyn. Also, Erik Ellestad points out that <a href=\"http:\/\/underhill-lounge.flannestad.com\/2008\/02\/19\/astoria-cocktail\/\">the Astoria is simply a dry Martini<\/a> (using the recipe from the <a href=\"http:\/\/underhill-lounge.flannestad.com\/2009\/04\/10\/why-the-savoy-cocktail-book\/\">Savoy Cocktail Book<\/a>; the Daily News&#39;s recipe sounds suspiciously like Audrey Saunder&#39;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.saveur.com\/article\/drink-recipes\/Fitty-Fitty-\">Fitty-Fitty<\/a> from the Pegu Club.) Might I engage in a small bit of self-promotion and offer <a href=\"\/2009\/05\/19\/mxmo-submission-the-astoria\/\">my own Astoria cocktail<\/a>?<\/li>\n<li>a neat article on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seattlemet.com\/eat-and-drink\/articles\/bars-ice-0809\/\">Seattle bartenders&#39; ice fetish<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>New York&#39;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.swanngalleries.com\/index.cgi\">Swann Galleries<\/a> auction house is having a sale of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.swanngalleries.com\/full.cgi?index_id=428&amp;sch_id=451\">vintage posters<\/a> on Wednesday. Among them are some nifty drinks-related posters like <a href=\"http:\/\/swanngalleries.rfcsystems.com\/asp\/fullCatalogue.asp?salelot=2185+++++459A&amp;refno=++621247&amp;saletype=\">a charming 1950s Dubonnet ad<\/a>, a 1927 <a href=\"http:\/\/swanngalleries.rfcsystems.com\/asp\/fullCatalogue.asp?salelot=2185+++++395+&amp;refno=++613307\">Cognac Monnet poster<\/a> with the slogan &quot;the sun in a glass&quot;, and <a href=\"http:\/\/swanngalleries.rfcsystems.com\/asp\/fullCatalogue.asp?salelot=2185+++++231+&amp;refno=++617326\">this stunner from 1896<\/a> advertising Absinthe Robette.
