Saturday night I found myself having a very good steak at Lark Creek in San Francisco after doing some shopping. In the wine list, they also listed all the alcoholic libations they had, which is a plus in my book; I don’t like to have to go over to the bar to see if they have a particular vodka or gin that I prefer, and if they have an obscure, specialty liquor, I won’t often think to ask the server if they have it. (Restaurants, are you listening? Full menu of libations = good.)
I was in the mood for a sippin’ drink, but I wanted to try something new. I noticed that they had an extensive listing of single malt scotches, and I thought to myself, "You know, I’ve never really ventured over to scotch. Maybe tonight’s the night I ought to pop my single-malt cherry."
So, I got a hold of Vidiot and several other scotch-drinking friends to ask their opinion. The following suggestions were made:
- Lagavulin; they had a 16-year Lagavulin
- Macallan – they had 12, 18, and 30-year. The 30-year was $75 for a glass. I’ll need a sugar daddy for that. Any takers?
- Oban
- Talisker
- Ardbeg – they didn’t have this
- Auchentoshan – they didn’t have this
- Laphroaig
- Caol Ila – they didn’t have this
- Jura
- Balvenie
I decided to go with the Talisker 10-year, which arrived in an old-fashioned glass with a thick bottom, neat. The glass felt good in my hand; I love a tumbler or old-fashioned glass that fits neatly in my hand and has an appropriate heft. A good glass adds to the whole cocktailian experience, n’est-ce pas? I noted the color; it was reminiscent of a jar of honey when held up to sunlight. I took a whiff, and smelled the peat. Finally, the liquid made its way to my mouth and rolled around on my tongue. It was a bit harsh, much different than bourbon. Then it sluiced down my throat, and the lingering aftertaste on my tongue was surprisingly sweet and smoky; I felt like I had just smoked a really good cigar.
It was the perfect postprandial cocktail to my steak dinner, and I think it’s safe to say that the single-malt scotch posse has now gained a new member.
So, what should I try next time?
